UmbraVora is an editorial publication dedicated to one thing: helping mobile gamers spend their time on titles that actually deserve it. We curate, test, and write about the best free games on iOS and Android — without sponsorships, affiliate deals, or paid placements influencing the rankings.

Our Mission

The mobile gaming landscape is enormous — and increasingly hard to navigate. App stores are saturated with thousands of free titles competing for attention, many of them designed less around fun and more around monetization. UmbraVora exists to cut through that noise.

Our editors test games the way real players play them: across weeks, not minutes. We evaluate pacing, progression, fairness of free-to-play economies, advertising load, controls, and long-term replay value. Every recommendation we publish has been earned through hands-on time with the product.

What We Stand For

◈
Editorial Independence

No developer, publisher, or platform has any say in our coverage. We are not affiliated with Apple, Google, or any studio whose games we review.

✦
Player-First Honesty

If a game is grindy, predatory, or thin on content, we say so. Our role is to respect your time and your wallet — not to flatter the industry.

★
Transparent Methodology

Every star rating is grounded in the same evaluation framework. We disclose our process so readers can judge our judgments for themselves.

How We Review

  1. Discovery We monitor the App Store and Google Play charts, indie release feeds, and reader submissions to surface candidates worth a closer look — including titles the stores' algorithms tend to overlook.
  2. Hands-On Testing Each title is played for a minimum of ten hours across multiple sessions, on both iOS and Android where applicable, to evaluate it the way an everyday player would experience it over time.
  3. Evaluation Framework We score every game across six pillars — gameplay, progression, fairness of monetization, ad load, presentation, and replay value — then translate that into our editorial star rating.
  4. Editorial Review Every published piece is read and challenged by a second editor before it goes live. Our goal is consistency: a 4.5 on UmbraVora should mean the same thing today as it did a year ago.
  5. Ongoing Maintenance Games change. Live-service updates, balance patches, and monetization shifts can move the needle, so we revisit our top-ranked titles and update our reviews when they do.

Who We Are

UmbraVora is run by a small, distributed team of writers, designers, and lifelong gamers based across Europe and North America. Between us we've spent more than two decades writing about games — for magazines, indie outlets, and our own projects — and we built UmbraVora because we couldn't find the kind of focused, honest, mobile-first review site we wanted to read ourselves.

We're a publication, not a marketplace. We don't sell games, we don't run banner ads on our editorial pages, and we don't accept payment in exchange for coverage. Our only obligation is to the reader.
